What you need to know before applying for an Egypt visa
Iraqi passport holders need a visa before travelling to Egypt — it is not issued on arrival. Safrat offers three options. All three carry the same validity and the same permitted stay; they differ in processing time and in who is eligible.
Current prices are shown on the cards above. Here is how the options compare:
All three are valid for 90 days from the issue date, allow a 30-day stay, and are single entry.
Which option suits you
Security Approval
A clearance available to all ages with no conditions attached. This is the default choice for most travellers who have time — ten working days works out to roughly two calendar weeks.
Standard Tourist Visa
Same availability — all ages, no conditions — but issued in 5 working days instead of 10. That saves you a full week. Choose it if your booking is close or you would rather not risk the timing.
E-Visa
The cheapest option by a clear margin, but it is not available to everyone and the conditions are strict. Read the next section before choosing it.
Who qualifies for the e-visa
You qualify if you are one of the following:
- Aged 16 or under
- Aged 60 or over
- An Iraqi citizen of any age holding valid residency in a Gulf state, Europe, the USA, or a Schengen country
If none of these describes you, this option is not open to you. Applying with the wrong type ends one of two ways: the application is rejected and the fee is gone, or you are denied entry at Cairo airport after already flying there.
The cards above show which options are available for your age — but check the conditions yourself before you pay.
Validity and stay — what the difference actually means
This is where people commonly get caught, so let me be clear about it.
Validity is the window in which you may enter Egypt after your visa is issued — 90 days. Stay duration is how many days you may remain inside Egypt once you have entered — 30 days.
So if your visa is issued at the start of the month, you have three months to pick your travel date. The 30-day count only starts when you actually arrive.
And note: all types are single entry. Leave Egypt and the visa is spent. Any new entry means a new application from scratch.
Documents required
Just one — a clear scan of your passport's first page, with at least 6 months of validity from your travel date.
No bank statement, no hotel booking, no invitation letter, no photographs.
What makes a photo acceptable
- The full page including all four corners
- Natural colour, not black and white
- Every number and letter readable
- No glare, shadow or blur
Cropped or unclear images are the single most common cause of delay. Processing does not begin until the document is uploaded completely and in its designated field.
How to count the processing time properly
The times quoted are working days, not calendar days. Two details matter:
- The submission day is not counted — the clock starts the day after
- Friday and Saturday are not counted
So a Standard Tourist Visa (5 days) submitted on Sunday arrives around the end of the following week — not five calendar days later.
Practical advice: apply at least two weeks before you travel. If your booking is less than a week away, take the Standard Tourist Visa.
Airport reception days by departure city
Reception is tied to specific days and airlines. This is the detail most travellers overlook, and it turns into a problem at the airport.
Reception requests must arrive at least 48 hours before the flight.
For the Standard Tourist Visa, reception is available every day of the week.
Check this table before you buy your ticket. If you book a flight on a day or airline not listed, reception will not be available.
One last thing
If the embassy rejects the application, the processing fees paid are non-refundable.
That is why the Safrat team reviews your documents before submission. Most rejections come down to a small documentation error or the wrong visa type — and that is what we catch before it reaches the embassy.
Frequently asked questions
Do Iraqi citizens need a visa for Egypt?
Yes. Iraqi passport holders need a visa before travelling to Egypt. You can apply online through Safrat and receive the approval by email without visiting any office.
What is the difference between the three Egypt visa types?
The Security Approval is a clearance at $190 issued in 10 working days, the Standard Tourist Visa is $205 issued in 5 days and is the fastest, and the E-Visa is $38 issued in 10 days but carries eligibility conditions. All three are valid 90 days with a 30-day stay and single entry.
Who is eligible for the $38 e-visa?
Only three cases: applicants aged 16 and under, applicants aged 60 and over, or Iraqi citizens of any age holding valid residency in a Gulf state, Europe, the USA, or a Schengen country. Otherwise your option is the Security Approval or the Standard Tourist Visa.
What happens if I apply with the wrong type?
The application is rejected with no refund, or you are denied entry at Cairo airport. Check the eligibility conditions before you pay — the Safrat team also reviews your application before submission.
How much does an Egypt visa cost for Iraqis?
$38 for the e-visa with eligibility conditions, $190 for the Security Approval, and $205 for the Standard Tourist Visa. Prices include government and service fees with nothing added at checkout.
How long does an Egypt visa take to process?
The Standard Tourist Visa takes 5 working days; the Security Approval and the E-Visa take 10 working days. The submission day and the Friday and Saturday holidays are not counted, and the clock starts once your documents are complete.
How long is an Egypt visa valid and how long can I stay?
All three types are valid for 90 days from the issue date — you must enter Egypt within that window. The permitted stay is 30 days, counted from your actual entry rather than the issue date.
What are the airport reception days from Iraq?
From Baghdad: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday with Iraqi Airways and EgyptAir. From Erbil: Saturday and Tuesday with the same two airlines. From Basra and Sulaymaniyah: Saturday with Iraqi Airways only. Reception requests must arrive at least 48 hours before the flight. For the Standard Tourist Visa, reception is available every day of the week.
What documents are required for an Egypt visa?
Only one: a clear scan of your passport's first page with at least 6 months of validity. No bank statement, hotel booking or invitation letter is needed.
Is the fee refunded if my application is rejected?
No. If the embassy rejects the application, the fees paid are non-refundable. This is why the Safrat team reviews your documents before submission to reduce the chance of rejection.
